Interior Design Project: 90’s Home Makeover Gets An Affordable Makeover

Interior Design Space Update

90’s Style Home Decor Gets a Contemporary Makeover

Affordable Home Makeover

The HER Staging & Interiors design team loved working with a style-savvy client to update the decor of her home built in the early 90s. This is one affordable home makeover project you’ve gotta see to believe.

Services included: an interior design plan, paint color selection and new painted walls throughout, fireplace fascia update, new lighting, a master bedroom and bathroom overhaul with painted cabinetry in the master bath, new furniture and home decor items.

The Client:

Adorable family of three downsized from more than 4,000 sq. ft. into a 1,500 sq. ft. Ranch-style home built in 1992. The home, which sits on a beautiful cul-de-sac lot lined with mature trees features three bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a loft and a sunroom is located in the suburbs of Indianapolis.

The Mrs., a cardiac-care nurse who enjoys interior decorating and party planning in her spare time, has lived in the home with her husband and pre-teen for two years. However, due to the time constraints of work and family life, she hadn’t been able to decorate the home to truly reflect her design style.

The Challenge:

Although beautiful with great bones, the home’s interior was outdated with a confusing mix of interior design styles and paint colors from the 90’s. The honey oak trim and flooring overpowered the space and made it hard for our client to select home furnishings in tones that reflected her personal style.

The Project:

Create a plan to give the home a cohesive design that reflected the family’s tastes and lifestyle. Update the home’s interior decor in the entry, hallway, sunroom, formal living room, kitchen, master bath and master bedroom giving each room new life with a modern feel.

Here’s a look at what the project looked like when we started:

The Solution:

Because the HER team focuses on affordable interior design, we always start a project by surveying the clients existing furniture and accessories. We set aside as much as we can use in the new design plan and we often donate the pieces our clients don’t keep to a local domestic violence shelter.

For this project, we managed costs by repurposing many of the homeowner’s current decor items like the mirrors in the master bathroom. We also resurfaced their existing cabinetry in the master bath instead of purchasing new cabinetry. We used Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformation paint to get the job done quickly.

The best part of the bathroom makeover was the honey gold fixtures installed in place of the chrome ones that were there before. Often times we find clients get nervous when we say bronze bath fixtures, but as you can see, these are BEAUTIFUL. Check them out:

Painting the walls

The paint plan on this project was tough to navigate because the homeowners wanted to keep all the honey oak trim and floors throughout the home. We had to remind ourselves that honey oak trim has a color… And the color is ORANGE.

Knowing that our core color was the orange tone, the HER team developed a new color plan selecting fresh new coordinating paint colors for each room that were appealing to our clients. We challenged them to stretch their comfort zones and try contemporary colors and bathroom finishes. We used Sherwin Williams Seasalt in the bathroom and Sherwin Williams Naval Blue as the accent color in the master bedroom.

Next, we painted the sunroom, hallways, master bedroom and master bath. To keep the project affordable, but still looking great, we used Home Depot’s Glidden paint for these areas in soft beige tones.

Resurfacing the fireplace

Stacked Stone in neutral colorWe started the construction part of the project with new fireplace fascia. We removed the contemporary smooth white tiles that conflicted with the Tuscan style of the kitchen and replaced it with neutral-colored stacked stone that matched the kitchen’s backsplash tile.

Bringing it all together

After all the construction was complete, we got to our FAVORITE part — INSTALL day! We purchased new furniture and accessories for the master bedroom, living room, sunroom and kitchen. Here are a few of our favorite pieces from this 90’s makeover project. You can purchase them online at in our store by clicking here.

The final project

Here’s the final project. Beautiful, indeed!

I’m in love with that bedroom! The color! The light fixture! My husband and I have recently taken on some home improvement projects at our place. Our challenge is that we rent, but we want our living space to represent us, so it has been difficult. While your transformation was big it also showed me how simple things like bedding and paint colors can make a difference.

Yay! I’m so glad you like it. Kudos to you and hubby for taking on an update. Remember, a little fresh paint goes a LONG way… especially in an apartment where you don’t want to make expensive changes that you can keep! Light fixtures make BIG changes on a small budget. Thanks for reading and we appreciate your comment. 🙂
